There are some really good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick to your mind, the ones you are desperately trying to recreate at home. In “Outfits in Fashion History,” the editors of Fashionista revisit their all-time favorite obscene.
Throughout her career, Gugu Mbatha-Raw has been constant on the red carpet: always elegant, always avant-garde. If you look at her style record, she likes classic silhouettes – think column dresses, pointy suits, fitted and flared dresses – which have been updated with bold embellishments or striking color palettes, so that they feel modern and exciting.
Take the Oscar de la Renta LBD she wore at the 2018 Directors Guild Of America Awards. It dates back to the beginning of the Fernando García / Laura Kim era, which Mbatha-Raw supported from the start. (She wore a fully sequined ankle-length dress from their debut collection to the Los Angeles premiere of “Beauty and the Beast” the year before.) The strapless dress was adorned with black sequins that build up as they go. you go down the skirt, like a barely noticeable gradient. Then along the curved high-low hem are strings of blue pearls that hang almost like raindrops or icicles – an unexpected yet beautiful touch.
Prior to this particular red carpet, Mbatha-Raw had worn the Oscar de la Renta to events like the British Independent Film Awards and the Governors Awards – both in 2014, two elegant high-necked knee-length dresses – so that the actor’s relationship with the house goes back a long way. Now that she’s promoting “Loki”, I hope we get to see a lot more of her and her style, even though it’s through Zoom.
