From the associated press:
A 67-year-old man was killed by an “accidental discharge of a firearm” at a shooting range in western New York, authorities said.
MPs were called to the Genesee Conservation League in Penfield at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sgt. Ken weber told the Democrat and the Chronicle de Rochester that the man was shot at the club’s indoor shooting range. The victim was declared dead on the spot. His name has not been released.
Wayne Cichetti, chairman of the club’s board of directors, said in a statement that the man was a club member and a certified shooting officer. Cichetti said the man was serving as a security guard in a United States Practical Shooting Association competition and was struck by an accidental discharge from a competitor’s weapon.
“Since the formation of the League in 1925, safety has always been our most important priority,” Cichetti said. “It is an extremely unfortunate accident and we mourn the loss of a devoted member and friend.”
