We often tend to ignore health problems until they become serious; and it might not be much different when it comes to lung diseases. Moderate symptoms indicating an underlying health problem related to the lungs are barely noticed, which in turn seriously worsens the situation, the nutritionist said. Lovneet Batra.
To avoid such a scenario, it’s important to learn about the symptoms (warning signs) of lung disease, she said.
Unexplained chest pain that lasts a month or more – especially if it gets worse when you breathe in or cough is a warning sign.
Mucous membranes, also called sputum or phlegm, are produced by the airways as a defense against infections or irritants. If your mucus production has lasted for a month or more, this could indicate lung disease.
Sudden weight loss
If there is a drastic drop in your weight with no diet or training regimen to rely on, that could be a signal your body is sending to show that a tumor is growing inside you, Batra noted.
Change in breathing
If you are short of breath or short of breath very easily, it may be a sign of lung disease. A tumor in the lungs or a buildup of fluid from a carcinoma blocks the passage of air, causing shortness of breath.
Persistent cough / cough with blood
A cough that you have had for eight weeks or more with blood is considered chronic and an important early symptom that indicates something is wrong with your respiratory system.
“Keep an eye out for all of these signs. Don’t take them lightly and it’s always best to have these things checked to avoid problems in the future, ”she noted.
