Couple killed, one injured in tractor-trailer crash on I-55 in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo.- Missouri Highway Patrol says two people died as a result of an accident on I-55 in Jefferson County.

The accident occurred in the northbound lanes, just after the Z road near Pevely.

Authorities said the accident involved a semi-trailer and four other cars.

The semi-trailer was traveling north in the third lane. A 2015 Chevrolet Cruze was also traveling northbound in third lane, but below the minimum speed limit. The semi-trailer braked as the Cruze approached, but struck the rear of it. This caused the Cruze to pull out on the right side of the road and overturn. The semitrailer then headed left and struck the right side of a 2013 Accura. The semitrailer passed through the cable barrier and struck the left front of a 2020 Kia Telluride. The barrier cable then struck the left side of a 2019 Nissan Altima.

Rebecca Byrd, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:48 pm The Ste. Woman Geneviève was the driver of the 2020 Kia Telluride. Her passenger, Leonard Byrd, 72, is also deceased.

2015 Chevrolet Cruze driver Jacob Stevenson, 23, was slightly injured.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says it is not sure how long the shutdown will last. Traffic cameras in the area show a backup of vehicles.
